On Roku, Met Opera on Demand subtitles are connected to the Roku device’s “Captions” settings. When playback of a video begins, you can turn on subtitles by pressing the “*” button on your remote and selecting “Captions: On”. This menu also allows you to select any other subtitle languages available. Alternatively, you may also update your Roku device settings and set Captions to On so that Met Opera on Demand subtitles always appears when playing videos. (Note, this will also cause subtitles/captions to appear in other Roku channels you use.)

To change the appearance of the subtitles, go to the Roku device Settings menu. Under Captions you can make adjustments to the size, color, and other styles for the Met Opera on Demand subtitles. We recommend setting the Background Opacity to “25%” for the most consistent and unobtrusive subtitle display during video playback. (Note, when setting Background Opacity to “OFF”, there is currently a limitation with this exact setting such that the subtitle display on the TV does not always respect this user setting and other background opacity settings (25, 50, 75, or 100%) will appear intermittently instead – which is why the recommended Background Opacity setting for now is 25%.)
